«The Horse's Bath» is an intimate and energetic study that pays homage to the luminous mastery of Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. Despite its small format (15x19 cm), the work encapsulates the dynamism and capture of light characteristic of the Valencian master.
The piece focuses on the moment when a young man on foot, leading a horse, emerges from the sea, using oil pastel to translate the vibrant moisture of the scene. I dedicated 40 hours to oil painting to achieve the intensity and the loose, creamy brushstrokes of traditional oil painting. Detailed work on this piece involved using layers of pastel to build the silky texture of the horse's coat and the sparkling transparency of the water.
This is not only an interpretation of a classic scene, but also a demonstration of pastel's ability to render ochre, turquoise, yellow, white, and violet colors, ensuring that the light seems to emanate directly from the surface.
