Construction of the Flavian Amphitheater, better known as the Roman Colosseum, began around 71 ad. Being Emperor Vespasian, Titus would later inaugurate the Colosseum in the year 80, with a festival that lasted 100 days and in which dozens of gladiators died. Its structure is elliptical, 188 meters long, 156 meters wide and 57 meters high. Made of brick and covered with travertine, it was divided into five levels with a capacity for more than 50.000 people.
The Colosseum of Rome is part of the history of an empire that, for the pleasure of the inhabitants of this city, organized fights between gladiators or against wild animals and fabulous spectacles called “naumachie”, which were real naval fights in the Arena full of water.
This majestic and imposing monument has become a cultural asset of the city and the world, surviving time and wars. Two thousand years later, and even though it is in ruins, its size and beauty continues to surprise us, so it is not surprising that since 2007 it has been considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world. It is also not surprising that it is the most visited monument in Italy with around six million visitors a year.
