Abandoned in 1534 and discovered in 1911 by the archaeologist Hiram Bingham, this inaccessible city, surrounded by mountains and spectacular forests, and located at 2.430m. High, constitutes the most important legacy of the Inca civilization. Machu Picchu (Monte Viejo in Quechua) was a religious and ceremonial center where a thousand inhabitants lived together.
The set has about 200 architectural structures built with carved stones and 109 stairways, some carved into the rock itself. Among the main buildings: the Royal Chamber, the Princess Palace, the Temple of the Three Windows or the Solar Clock.
The Machu Picchu sanctuary was included by unesco in 1983 on the World Heritage list. It is also part of the exclusive and reduced list of seven wonders of the modern world.

Superbe! ! ! J'adore. Je l'ai visité en 1991 après avoir fait un stage hospitalier de 2 mois à Lima. En ce temps-là, le tourisme était peu développé et avec un autre étudiant de ma promo nous avions pu prendre un train local avec les habitants des Andes. Sur le site et pour quelques sous, un jeune Péruvien nous avait embarqué pour une balade autour. Il avait alors fallu passer par un chemin très étroit surplombant un précipice. Ce fut un moment de vertige intense. Heureusement que j'ai réussi à passer. Après le garçon nous a emmené dans des lieux plus accessibles! ! ! Il y avait aussi de petits enfants qui dansaient, habillés en habits locaux. De très bons souvenirs. Très bonne journée
