In Rio de Janeiro, there is the statue of Christ the Redeemer, also known as Christ of Corcovado. The statue crowns the top of Mount Corcovado, in the Tijuca National Park. The mountain reaches about 710 meters above sea level. There, an 8-meter pedestal supports Christ the Redeemer with its 30.1-meter height and a weight of 1.200 tons. From there, the Christ watches over the city of Rio de Janeiro and contemplates the mountain of Pão de Açúcar.
This Christ is conceived as a monumental sculpture in the art deco style. The work, whose structural framework is made of reinforced concrete, is covered by soapstone, a stone also called soapstone due to the malleability of its material. Soapstone was made into millions of triangular tesserae that were combined on the surface of the statue to create a coating.
After five years of construction, Christ the Redeemer or Christ of Corcovado was inaugurated on October 12.1931. In 2007 it was chosen as one of the seven modern wonders.
For Brazil this Christ is represented as a symbol of redemption, forgiveness and protection.
